Quick update: Rosie is STILL waiting to hear from the last 3 colleges. The news wasn’t good from Brown, but when she saw that her high school senior friends with straight A’s AND top-notch SAT scores hadn’t been accepted, she pretty much gave up on that possibility.

She’s moving on to Plan B:  A gap year spent working as an Au Pair in France.

“Living in France and getting fluent in French is the only thing that excites me as much as acting,” she told me when she visited a couple of weeks. This lightened my heart for many reasons.

As a person who spent time living in a foreign country as a child (Belgium), I firmly believe in the value of immersing oneself in a different culture and learning first hand about the world beyond the U.S. Rosie’s been lucky enough to travel to France twice with her high school (as well as Sweden, Denmark and Norway!) so she’s been bitten by the travel bug.

I haven’t been to Europe in almost 30 years. What a great excuse for a trip to Paris!

She’s great with kids, already speaks French well, and dreams of someday acting in French. This could be just what the universe is directing her toward. She’ll return wiser and more cultured, ready to tackle this college conundrum once again.

We’ll see what the next week brings us….
